Existing Flavored Syrups Don’t Meet the Mark
The idea for Motif went through a few iterations before we landed on a company crafting clean-label flavored syrups for coffee and tea. One insight kept surfacing when I was having conversations with coffee shop owners and roasters across NYC: the flavored syrups used in most coffee and tea drinks are full of junk.
Big-name brands dominate the market and their ingredient lists are loaded with excessive sugars, artificial flavors, and synthetic dyes, which are ingredients that don’t belong in a quality coffee or tea drink. Many of the syrups being used today contain over 20 grams of sugar per serving and signature coffee drinks made with 4 pumps of these syrup contain more than the recommended daily value of added sugar.
What I heard from the industry echoed what many of us already suspected: flavored syrups haven’t kept pace with how people actually want to drink coffee today.
Customers Want Better Flavored Syrups for Their Coffee and Tea
According to Keurig Dr. Pepper’s State of Beverages Report, 75% of Gen Z and Millennials say they customize their beverages, and 44% of those customers use flavored syrups or drops. Once I started digging deeper into this insight and spoke directly with coffee and tea drinkers, it became even clearer: there’s a real appetite for flavor, just not at the expense of health.
Hundreds of people told me they wanted a natural syrup option that added flavor without compromise. Some had stopped using syrups altogether because they couldn’t find a clean, natural alternative that fit their lifestyle.
This shift isn’t surprising. People are rethinking their daily rituals and choosing products that support healthier habits:
Clean-label isn’t a niche trend anymore. It’s becoming the expectation.
